SENSORSUIT is the Metakosmos base layer. It provides injury protection, thermal management and biomarker tracking, and it is the element in continuous contact with the operator throughout a mission.

## WHY SENSING SITS HERE

Physiological measurement requires contact with the body. Sensors mounted further out, in an exosuit or hard shell, measure through intervening layers, which degrades signal quality and introduces variability with fit and movement.

The base layer is also largely common across environments, because the body it interfaces with does not change. A base layer qualified for sensing accuracy, biocompatibility and thermal behaviour carries that qualification into every configuration built above it.

## THREE FUNCTIONS, ONE LAYER

Injury protection, thermal management and sensing interact. Padding placed for injury protection alters thermal conduction. Cooling channels occupy the same volume as sensor routing. Sensor mounting can create pressure points that cause injury over a long mission.

## SENSING CONSTRAINTS

Four factors degrade physiological sensing in extreme environments.

Motion artefact affects optical sensing under vibration, impact and heavy exertion. Peripheral perfusion falls under cold stress, high-G loading and dehydration, reducing signal at the extremities. Barrier integration makes any sensor penetration through a pressure bladder or chemical barrier a qualification item. And consumer-rated components do not survive the conditions the suit exists to protect against.

Redundancy and cross-validation address this. A system deriving core temperature from two independent methods and flagging disagreement gives a supervisor more usable information than a single higher-accuracy sensor.

## PLATFORM POSITION

SENSORSUIT sits within the [CORE hardware layer](https://www.metakosmos.co/core) beneath the domain-specific variants, and feeds the [PULSE telemetry layer](https://www.metakosmos.co/pulse).

Validation runs through [SUITRIX rigs](https://www.metakosmos.co/prove/suitrix) for environmental envelope characterisation and [SYNHUM](https://www.metakosmos.co/prove/synhum) for sensing accuracy under representative articulation and thermal loading.

## DEPLOYMENT UNDER EXISTING PPE

A base layer with validated sensing can be worn under existing protective equipment as well as under purpose-built exosuits, which applies across the [land](https://www.metakosmos.co/land) and [sea](https://www.metakosmos.co/sea) domains where organisations hold substantial existing PPE investment.
