The University of Technology Sydney received a grant under the New South Wales Space Research Network's Seed Project Program to collaborate with Metakosmos on digital optimisation of spacesuit form and fit.

The work drew on UTS research in geometry processing, mesh parametrisation and digital fabrication.

## THE RESEARCH QUESTION

A pressurised suit's mobility depends on maintaining constant enclosed volume through joint articulation. The geometry must therefore be optimised against a moving body rather than a static one, and across a population of body shapes rather than a single subject.

## SEED FUNDING STRUCTURE

Industry and academia operate on different rhythms, success measures and intellectual property expectations.

Seed grants fund a defined piece of work with a defined output, which establishes whether a working relationship functions before either party commits at scale.

## WHAT FOLLOWED

March 2024: $250,000 Australian Space Agency Moon to Mars Supply Chain Capability grant targeting technology readiness for the Kosmosuit.

July 2024: Engineering Business of the Year at AusSpace24, recognising the digital optimisation work.

October 2025: the UTS collaboration was shown at the university's TechLab facility during the International Astronautical Congress in Sydney.

## STATE ROLE

New South Wales support has extended beyond this grant. The state's function in the space ecosystem has been connecting research capability to industry problems.

Australian universities hold research depth in materials, computational design, medical research and human factors. Australian companies hold the engineering problems that require it.

## CURRENT STATUS

Computational design methods from this work inform the [CORE suit integration architecture](https://www.metakosmos.co/core) and are validated through [test rigs and surrogate testing](https://www.metakosmos.co/prove).

Research collaboration is coordinated through [LABS](https://www.metakosmos.co/labs).
