Three patents have been filed by Metakosmos. The Bioastronautics Engine Suit Operating System, which handles telemetry tracking, testing and compliance across the [Kosmosuit platform](https://www.metakosmos.co/platform), is patent-pending.

## WHAT THE PROTECTION COVERS

The protected position is the integration layer rather than the garment. It covers the interface architecture connecting suit subsystems to a common bioastronautics interface, the data schema that makes measurements comparable across domains, and the analytics converting physiological signal into operational output.

That integration work was the stated objective of the company's March 2024 Australian Space Agency Moon to Mars grant, which funded establishing connectivity between suit subsystems and the proprietary bioastronautics interface for deployment across multiple centres.

## WHY IT IS CALLED AN OPERATING SYSTEM

An operating system abstracts hardware, holds interfaces stable so both sides can change independently, and arbitrates finite resources between competing demands.

A suit presents all three. Sensor hardware varies by domain and by generation. The garment carries a qualification cost that analytics do not. And power, thermal capacity, bandwidth and consumables are finite and contested between subsystems. Kernel360 operates today as the data and abstraction layer; subsystem resourcing is a designed capability of the architecture rather than a function it currently performs in service.

That last asymmetry drives the architecture. Re-qualifying a pressure garment is a test campaign measured in months. Improving an alerting model is a software release. Separating them allows [CORE hardware variants](https://www.metakosmos.co/core) to evolve without disturbing the [telemetry layer](https://www.metakosmos.co/pulse), and analytics to improve without touching the garment's certification basis.

## OPEN INTERFACES ALONGSIDE PROTECTED CORE

Kernel360 launched with a modular open architecture supporting third-party integration. Defence and agency buyers increasingly require data rights and interface documentation as contract terms, and the platform publishes interfaces while protecting the integration layer beneath them.

## COMPLIANCE IN THE SAME LAYER
