Engineers, medical doctors and scientists make up the Metakosmos team, according to [Startup Daily's coverage](https://www.startupdaily.net/topic/funding/spacesuit-startup-metakosmos-flies-high-with-2-million-pre-seed-raise/) of the 2024 pre-seed round.

## WHY THE MIX

Human systems engineering spans materials, physiology, electronics, software and data architecture. Failures occur at the interfaces between those disciplines.

A pressure bladder is a mechanical problem. The metabolic cost of moving against it is a physiology problem. The threshold at which a measurement should trigger an abort is a medical judgment.

NASA's documented pattern of EVA injury illustrates the interface: glove design combines the highest dexterity requirement, the highest cycle count and the tightest pressure containment tolerance in the suit.

## CLINICAL CONTRIBUTION

Engineering measures core temperature to a stated accuracy. Determining which value, at which rate of rise, in which individual, triggers which response is a clinical judgment informed by occupational health evidence.

## RESEARCH RELATIONSHIPS

The Kolling Institute collaborates on musculoskeletal research and served as a Kernel360 beta testing partner. The University of Technology Sydney collaborates on computational design. CSIRO and the Department of Defence have engaged since 2020 on production processes.

The Australian Postgraduate Research Intern Network places PhD researchers on component and technology development. Research from these engagements has included work published in Elsevier's Carbon journal.
